As you walk around the streets of Manchester today, you’ll notice the beautiful architecture and the friendly atomsphere. Something else you might notice is those less fortunate that have to spend the night on the streets as they have nowhere else to go.
Since his election in May 2017, The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has said he aims to end the need for rough sleeping in Greater Manchester by 2020. He’s calling on the generosity of the people of Manchester to support his ‘A Bed Every Night’ campaign, launched in November 2018, so no one sleeps rough on the streets of Manchester this winter.
And it’s not just a bed, those in need will also have a hot meal, a hot shower, and someone who can support them moving off the streets and into a home. So far, 901 individuals have been supported by the scheme and 285 of those have been able to move from A Bed Every Night into a fixed address. So it’s safe to say, it’s working! At ANS, we are committed to supporting our local community, especially those who need our help most. Corporate social responsibility is something we put our heart and soul into and we are committed to supporting the Manchester community in every way we can. So we have chosen to make The Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Charity our chosen charity of the year 2019 to raise funds for the A Bed Every Night campaign.
We have a huge number of events lined up throughout the year to raise as many funds as possible to support this incredible cause. And we’ve already started! On Monday 4th February we sponsored the Tackle4MCR gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester.
Tackle4MCR is a combined effort by Andy Burnham and Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany, to raise funds for the A Bed Every Night campaign. Some of our senior management team at ANS had the pleasure of attending the dinner and said it was a truly inspiring night. To find out more about Tackle4MCR, watch the video below.
Speaking of ANS’ commitment to the cause, Andy Burnham said, “I am delighted that ANS Group has chosen The Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Charity as their charity of the year 2019 and that they will be supporting our A Bed Every Night campaign. It is brilliant to see local organisations addressing the issue of rough sleeping and homelessness to make a real difference in our city-region.”
Paul Shannon, CEO at ANS, added, “As a Mancunian born and bred organisation, giving back to our community is very important to us. We couldn’t be more motivated to support a campaign that seeks to resolve one of Manchester’s and society’s biggest problems.”
I think our decision to wholeheartedly support the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Charity this year can be summed up in the words of Henril Ibsen:
"A community is like a ship, everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm."
